“How rich in invention, how interesting from beginning to end it is,” Clara Schumann once enthused about Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor when she premiered it. With her album Clara & Robert Schumann: Piano Concertos, pianist Beatrice Rana shows that the piano virtuoso could hold a candle to her husband in terms of composition. Together with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, she complements Robert Schumann’s imaginative Piano Concerto in A minor with a piano concerto that his wife had already composed as a 13-year-old – also in A minor and almost more ingenious than that of her husband.”I think the intellectual value of this concerto is very, very underestimated in music history,” Beatrice Rana said, explaining her love of Clara Schumann’s composition. “It’s fascinating to see that she conceived this music without any limitations, that as a teenager she composed a continuous concerto with no pause between movements. We often think of Franz Liszt’s First Piano Concerto as revolutionary in this regard – but Clara wrote hers so much sooner!” Beatrice Rana concludes her album with a Liszt arrangement of a Schumann love song that Robert dedicated to his Clara with the words “Mein guter Geist, mein bess’res Ich.” A humorous hint?

Beatrice Rana’s interpretations have been widely praised, with the New York Classic Review writing of a Carnegie Hall concert, “One cannot imagine hearing the music played better than Beatrice Rana played it.”
