Beneath his romantic songs Ron Gallo hides a much more extravagant and wild character. Once his guitar is plugged in and the microphone is in his hand, the young American metamorphoses and unveils his true nature with some staggering punk-rock garage, accompanied by his two henchmen Joe Bisirri and Dylan Sevey. Nashville also hosts rock fanatics, and in an era where pop stars dominate over punks, Gallo doesn’t give in! After covering human frustration on his first album Heavy Meta, he has now turned to self-exploration for this second opus. Stardust Birthday Party is a particularly strange bit of psychedelic meditation. Bringing to life a rebellious, passionate and sensitive youth, Ron Gallo would fit right in the burlesque scenarios of Phantom of the Paradise or Rocky Horror Picture Show 2.0.The young prodigy plays with great urgency, as he knows the punk movement is slowly dying. But this doesn’t stop him from reassuring his audiences with the tune It’s All Gonna Be OK. Guitar build ups, cosmic distortions and brainwashing through lyrical repetition, Gallo hypnotises his listeners with his electric loops. Tackling some more personal themes, It’s All Gonna Be OK sets out to comfort.

Stardust Birthday Party shows the confrontation of the punk artist with anxiety, angst and a lack of self-esteem. It’s a sort of therapy album that always puts music and entertainment first. Weighing up the pros and cons, alternating with negative and positive waves, he even pays homage to John Coltrane on Love Supreme (Work Together). It’s a birthday party that moves through different moods to end with a sublime ballad: Happy Deathday. Smooth and melancholic, brilliantly poetic, Gallo is a talent that New West Records won’t be looking to get rid of anytime soon. – Clara Bismuth
