Jerome Reuter’s music project Rome has more in common with Ukraine than the occasional guest appearance. Since 2015, the Luxembourg-based singer-songwriter has regularly toured the country for concerts on his European tours. This was also the case in February 2022, when Reuter was still performing solo gigs in Kyiv and Odessa just days before the big Russian invasion, despite drastic travel warnings. But Reuter – a man driven by his creativity who has always gone his own way – vowed even beyond that to return with the full band in the foreseeable future. A few months later, after playing several online charity shows in support of Ukraine, he first returned for a solo performance, becoming the first foreign artist to perform a full concert on Ukrainian soil since the war began. This July 2022 performance was used to raise funds for a refugee shelter in Lviv. Then, exactly one year to the day after Reuter’s last performance in Kyiv, he made good on his promise and played two now history-making full-band shows with Rome in Lviv and Kyiv on the first anniversary of the start of the war.

Reuter’s support for Ukraine’s struggle for freedom comes as no surprise to anyone familiar with Rome’s previous work. Reuter has been singing about European solidarity and culture for nearly two decades, so it is only a logical consequence that he now releases “Gates of Europe,” a conceptual work about the ongoing war in Europe.
