The quartet as a complete ideal, carried by personal writing and resolutely collective playing, two primary ideas proposed again to a post-pandemic world, its uncertainties, its violence, and despite everything perhaps also its promises. The story actually began during the very first moments of newfound freedom following the first confinement, where Pierre de Bethmann and Antoine Paganoo rediscovered each other as neighbors over the course of multiple duo sessions. It continued with a feeling of obviousness by associating Simon Tailleu, pillar of the Medium Ensemble, and David El Malek, a major meeting of the ilium years, whose tenor saxophone playing has now established itself as one of the strongest voices of the contemporary European jazz. The group thus constituted, with a few original concerts, online then in real life in Aix en Provence (Petit Duc) and in Paris (Sunside), then elsewhere, Aléa proposed last June the reissue of the album GO, published unequally in 2012 on the Plus Loin label, as a prelude to a project again centered on compositional work for a small group. And this same momentum led the four musicians to the Ferber studio in February 2023, for a new stage experienced as a moment of grace, two days of recording producing two albums, the first being presented here. A new repertoire therefore, made up of more or less expected forms, more or less tameable melodic lines, more or less complex harmonies and rhythms… to play, again and again. Simple credo of four artists united by the love of a now century-old culture as much as by the faith in a possible future, together above all. Perhaps also to mock our post-modern exhaustions a little, and to continue to believe in a music to share, which celebrates the mystery of existence all the better as it also knows how to heal some wounds.
