The Kennett Flash Rooftop Series was our second concert on our first mini tour as PAKT. After an incredible first show at Daryl’s House in Pawling, NY, our 4-hour drive from the Catskills is delayed by a semi-tractor flipped on its side slowing traffic to a snail’s pace on I-95 South around Newark Airport. But we eventually make it for setup and soundcheck. It is beautiful weather for our first outdoor show on the rooftop of a downtown parking garage in Kennett Square. We are in great hands with a wonderful sound crew, so all is in a good place prior to showtime. There isn’t enough time for dinner, so we chat and munch on snacks and veggies in the green room until show time at 7:30pm. We have another nice turnout for PAKT tonight, happy listening folks in their lounge chairs spread across the lot in front of the stage. As we climbed on to the stage wearing sunglasses with the bright glare of the setting sun in our eyes, the first strains of PAKT music begins to an expectant audience. We never know where the music will go, and I feel like our travel here informs our first musical journey which is well received: ‘Incident on 95.’ While we are playing, we are in such deep states of listening, the smallest musical gesture could suggest a direction for us as we are collectively improvising and composing in the moment. Ideas emerge from waves of texture and sound, creating moods that jump-start rhythms, themes, melodies, harmonic sequences, and new forms. Anything can happen. We take great risks with this music, jumping off imagined musical cliffs. As I listen back to Mike Tate’s recording of our 90-minute show, I find us at times playing almost mutated calypso, a delicate blues, shards of jazz, deep swamp funk. A near-chaotic expression of these times shows up in ‘Unspooling for Humanity.’ The chemistry of this band is incredible. Impressionistic. The band is telepathic. We find ourselves spontaneously ending songs together in the moment. We just know, somehow. The show was another success, with many folks excitedly talking to the band, and having their PAKT CDs autographed. We tear down the stage, pack up the vans and head for the green room to relax. Time to find a late dinner. It seems Kennett Square is mostly closed by this point, but we finally drive to a place just before they close for some fish tacos and have a nice wind down. It was a good day. I am thankful for these concerts, this wonderful band, and the opportunity to play for an audience once again.
