Nat King Cole and Dean Martin are thrown into an awkward festive embrace on this double album of their collected Christmas songs. Martin’s laidback cool enlivens Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! and I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm. But on the many standards from his 1966 Christmas Album, his low voice rumbles as though trying to suppress a hearty guffaw, possibly aimed at his risible backing singers.By contrast, Cole soars over his own overeager choir and adds a smooth, cosy gravitas to the fluffiest of novelty songs. He tenderly woos The Little Christmas Tree as if it were a reticent wallflower, remaining unruffled when a backup crew who sound like the Chipmunks join him on Frosty the Snowman. Cole’s carols provide the perfect Christmas soundtrack, although the bitterness of Happy New Year is a welcome surprise.
