Legendary drummer of the Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart, brings us his first solo album in four years with RAMU. The title refers to his workstation, the Random Access Musical Universe which he uses to access a dizzying array of samples for creating his music. Exploring difficult themes, Hart builds an atmospheric and texturally dense sonic world.Mickey Hart is best known as a drummer in the Grateful Dead, which for three decades channeled the voices and visions of rock’s psychedelic counterculture and blended them with folk, blues, country, jazz, and other American music streams. On the strength of that work, Hart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and named to Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time.
While most albums function as a snapshot of a place and time, RAMU is more like a photo album, containing samples and recordings from around the globe, originating between 1944 and 2017. Mickey’s life ambition has always been to record and preserve the music of the world using the most innovative and high-quality equipment possible. Through the making of RAMU, that goal has grown to be something more. It’s about creation through collaboration, through combination, and through inclusion. RAMU acts as a reunion of like-minds, of a musical family torn apart by time, expanding to include the sounds and influences of the modern era.
With the new album, Hart has assembled a profound statement surveying a lifetime of making music. Paying tribute to Jerry Garcia and Puerto Rican percussion master Giovanni Hidalgo, it also documents a historic Indonesian gamelan before filtering it through futuristic technologies and rhythms.
