Buoyed by her hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Mariah Carey’s 1994 album Merry Christmas helped reignite interest in holiday albums and went on to be one of the biggest-selling Christmas albums of all time. In keeping with that tradition, 2020’s Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special finds her performing some of her favorite Christmas songs alongside a bevy of guests. The soundtrack to her streaming special, Magical Christmas is Carey’s third holiday-themed album and follows her previous Top Five Billboard 200-charting Christmas albums, the aforementioned Merry Christmas and 2010’s Merry Christmas II You. This time out, she performs new renditions of some of her biggest holiday hits, including “When Christmas Time Comes,” “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and “Oh Santa,” the latter of which finds her joined by guests Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson. We also get a festively funky take on “Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)/House Top Celebration” featuring Snoop Dogg and Jermaine Dupri. Elsewhere, Carey puts her sonorous spin on such beloved traditional Christmas songs as “Sleigh Ride,” “Joy to the World,” and the Peanuts classic “Christmas Time Is Here.” An ebullient production, Magical Christmas Special further underlines Carey’s reputation as a pop Christmas diva. – Matt Collar
