At first glance, this compilation of many rare DeShannon sides from the early and mid-’60s – most of which have not been reissued elsewhere – looks enticing. What it ends up proving, however, is that the prolific singer/songwriter wrote quite a few puffy tunes in addition to her classics. Most of the tracks on Side One came out as flop Liberty singles in the early ’60s (the first of which she issued under the name Jackie Dee, hence the title of this compilation). Her 1959 debut “Buddy” is decent rockabilly, and her version of Leiber and Stoller’s “Trouble” is okay, but the rest is surprisingly shallow teen idol fodder, including a duet with Bobby Vee. Side Two, from a slighty later vintage, is far gutsier and better, though several of these cuts have been reissued, like the dramatic “You Won’t Forget Me” and the gospel-influenced “Glory Wave.” The Buddy Holly covers are all right, and “Try to Forget Him” is good girl group-type material, as is the obscure early Randy Newman composition “Did He Call Today Mama.” “After Last Night” (not a DeShannon original), on the other hand, was done much better by the obscure girl group the Rev-Lons. You get the idea…these are the kind of artifacts that will matter only to hard-bitten fans, though some of them aren’t bad at all.
