1775 – and thus a quarter of a century before his famous oratorios “The creation” and “The seasons” – Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) wrote his first oratorio, “Il ritorno di Tobia”. The work was enthusiastically celebrated by the audience at the Vienna premiere, which he directed. This masterpiece, forgotten despite its initial success in the 19th century, is now available in an excellent new recording with a dream cast for Haydn’s music. The Mozarteum orchestra Salzburg under its former chief conductor Ivor Bolton, the Bach Choir Salzburg and a top-class ensemble of soloists: Mauro Peter (Tenor), Lucy Crowe (soprano), Anna Bonitatibus (soprano), Bettina Ranch (Alto), and Neal Davies (Bass).”Il ritorno di Tobia” (“the return of Tobias”) was a commissioned work by the Vienna Tonkünstler-Societät, which recorded prominent musicians from abroad, such as Haydn. The Italian Libretto is by Giovanni Gastone Boccherini, the brother of the famous composer Luigi Boccherini. The plot tells of the return of Tobias, believed dead, and the healing of his blind father. Haydn and his Librettist were now oriented towards the Italian opera seria: Aria follows Aria, in between the story is told in recitatives. Haydn revised the work again in 1784, but he could not prevent “il ritorno di Tobia” from disappearing from the game plans in the 19th century. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that this colourful masterpiece was rediscovered, even in the large choral scenes.
