Dawda Jobarteh’s new album »Do you know a place called Flekkerøy?« is jazzy with plenty of room for improvisational parts. Dawda fills this space with the dreamy sounds of his kora, a 21-string harp. Accentuated by Gunnar Halle’s trumpet playing, the sound seems Nordic and Scandinavian and merges into a unique sound pattern.The album will be released on CD and LP on Ajabu! At a young age, Dawda left his home country of Gambia and lost touch with its traditions. When he moved to Scandinavia in his early 20s, he explored the possibilities of the kora and found a way to continue and develop the tradition he had left behind. Dawda’s music is an expression of the oscillation between tradition and modernity, old and new, different cultures and genres.

The album’s title refers to a small Norwegian island that Dawda associates with beauty and contemplation. The eight tracks are a mixture of original compositions, rearranged traditional West African melodies and covers of Don Cherry’s “Togo” and Thelonious Monk’s “Jackie-ing”. In addition to Gunnar Halle’s trumpet playing, Dawda is supported by Gambian percussionist Sal Dibba, Danish drummer Stefan Pasborg and Malian bassist Elisée Sangare.
