Nostalgia for the times when we danced: who has never let their arms wave in the air like charmed snakes, listening to Altin Gün’s Goca Dünya? With this hit that lent 2017 a little exotic flavour, the group established itself as a tribute to the great and largely unknown movement of 1970s Turkish pop. In 2019, their second album Gece earned them a Grammy nomination in the catch-all “world music” category. But time passes. After the 70s with their groovy psychedelic rock, here came the 80s and the synth revolution. For their third album, Altin Gün does not change anything fundamental (oriental melodies, Turkish lyrics) but replaces guitars with electronic machines. Yol was conceived in 2020, in lockdown, away from stages and effusive collective experiences. This perhaps explains the new outlook, this music for playing loud on headphones while dancing alone. Still based in Amsterdam, the band are exploring new sounds, borrowed from disco, house and vintage synth pop. It’s funky, light, less epic than before, sometimes melancholy and often convincing. But it’s hard to say whether Yol is just a sideways step aside for the band, the beginning of a turbo-folk turn, or simply the best way to escape the “world music” category come the next round of Grammy nominations. – Stéphane Deschamps
