Toro Y Moi is teasing something…and it may be an upcoming live release of his 2022 album MAHAL, due out this Friday, June 30th. An album titled MAHAL (Live from Big Sur) was momentarily shared to Spotify at midnight on June 23rd, appearing on the Spotify-generated Release Radar playlist of users who listen to Toro Y Moi. However it was removed very quickly, now hidden from the artist’s profile. The version of the live album on Spotify features all thirteen tracks from the studio version of MAHAL, however, the live album’s length is listed as 38 minutes compared to the studio version’s 41 minute runtime, as many of the tracks are twenty to thirty seconds shorter when played live. The album does not list any of the guests from the studio version of MAHAL either, which originally featured Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Salami Rose Joe Louis, Sofie Royer and The Mattson 2.

MAHAL (Live from Big Sur) has a light-brown album cover with a layout that references the original MAHAL design. The photo of frontman Chaz Bear on his jeepney has been replaced by a psychedelic-inspired picture of Bear playing the guitar and singing, possibly from the Big Sur show. Within the letters that spell out the album title, the words “Live from Big Sur at Fernwood Resort” can be seen.

On June 27th, the Toro Y Moi Instagram account shared a banner post hinting at the album’s release. On Sept. 23th and 24th, 2022, Toro Y Moi hosted the “2 days of music” camping event at Fernwood Lodge and Campground, during which the live album was recorded. Salami Rose Joe Louis was present as a guest artist for this weekend, so it is possible that she provided her vocals for the live version of “Magazine,” even though she is not directly listed as a feature on the leaked album. Since the teaser post, the album has not been formally announced, however the account has adapted the brown theme to its profile picture and story highlights.

Toro Y Moi has been traveling as part of the Re:SET concert series in 2023 alongside Steve Lacy, James Blake and Fousheé. With this endeavor coming to a close, this live album appears to be the next move for Bear and the band.
