Pianist, composer Timo Alakotila and accordion artist Johanna Juhola are celebrating the publication of their new album.

The concert programme includes compositions made by both duo members, based on the rhythm types of folk music, as well as traditional folk music songs, and improvisation based on these. Juhola and Alakotila have a simultaneously rooted and traditional-conscious style, but both also have the tendency to merge several styles that are dear to them into the harmonies and phrases of compositions.

The record to be published is part of the publication series of the Department of Folk Music at Sibelius Academy, and the record’s material is based on Alakotila’s folk music improvisation method, which he teaches at Sibelius Academy. Alakotila and Juhola’s first album “Vapaassa tilassa” (“In free space”) focusing on folk music improvisation, was published in 2007, when the number of improvised solo was still relatively low with folk music sounds. Then, the visiting artists included Aili Ikonen and Pekka Kuusisto. This time, the duo relies on the power of two players and the freedom of duo music.

The Alakotila and Juhola have been playing together for nearly 20 years and have performed extensively in other Nordic countries, Europe and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to Finland.
