Ruud de Wolff (* May 12, 1941; † December 18, 2000) and Riem de Wolff (* April 15, 1943; † September 12, 2017 were born in Indonesia. Together with their parents, sister and younger brother, the two came to the Netherlands in 1949. At the request of their father, they learned to play the guitar and, after being able to accompany themselves as far as singing, formed a band at the end of the 1950s. They were discovered during a performance at a cultural festival and received a recording contract under the stage name “Blue Diamonds” in 1959. The first single Till I Kissed You, a cover version of the successful title of the Everly Brothers, sold so well that they tried it with other titles of the Everly Brothers.
The Blue Diamonds (ca. 1960-1969)Producer Jack Bultermann extracted older tracks from the archives, gave them a contemporary arrangement and offered them to the young duo. Even before the tracks appeared on vinyl, the duo was invited to the Dutch television, where they introduced the track Ramona. This is a title from the year 1928, which at that time was a slow waltz. The Blue Diamonds made a brisk foxtrot out of it. It became her biggest success. After the title had already sold 250,000 copies in the Netherlands, it was also recorded in German, and the duo had their biggest hit in Germany, for which they also received the Golden Record. In total, Ramona was released by the Blue Diamonds in five languages, and with the English version, the title was able to place itself both in the US charts and in the British hit lists. Ramona also became a hit in Spain and France. In Germany, the Blue Diamonds have been guests in numerous television shows and have also been seen and heard in two feature films. In the movie Ramona, the song of the Blue Diamonds could only be heard briefly at the beginning, in full length it was sung there by Willy Hagara.
