Alexander Claffy, who comes from the Philadelphia area, is the son of a pianist and a singer, which meant that he was surrounded by music from an early age. He initially played electric bass before switching to double bass. He first had lessons with bassist Mike Boone, then with Dwayne Burno, Ben Wolfe, Gregg August and Ron Carter. He studied at The New School. From the early 2010s, he worked with Orrin Evans, among others, with whom he made his first recordings in 2013 (It Was Beauty; Criss Cross Jazz, 2013); he also played with Johnny O’Neal, Louis Hayes, Russell Malone, Wallace Roney, Christian Scott, Jim Snidero and Sean Jones. He has also played on recordings by David Gibson, Nancy Harrow, Sandy Taylor, John Petrucelli, Ben Eunson, Benny Benack III and J. D. Allen III. In the field of jazz, he was involved in twelve recording sessions between 2013 and 2018.

In 2018, Claffy released the album Standards under his own name: What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life? in 2018, which featured contributions from Kurt Rosenwinkel and Dave Kikoski, among others. On it, he interprets pop songs and standards such as Lennon-McCartney’s “Michelle”, Duke Pearson’s “Is That So?”, Cole Porter’s “Just One of Those Things” and “You Must Believe in Spring”. In 2020 he accompanied Kristiana Roemer on her album House of Mirrors. He currently performs in New York as a member of the bands of Charles Owens, Sharel Cassity, Benny Benack, Itamar Borochov and Seamus Blake as well as with his own trio and quintet.
