Listening to his first international album, one soon comes to understand that Sabry Mosbah’s roots are not limited to the traditions of his native Tunisia. The son of popular singer Slah Mosbah got a serious education in popular music, but also decisive slices of electric guitars and funky rhythms. Produced by Sofyann Ben Youssef, musicologist, producer and keyboard player in Tuareg group Kel Assouf, Mes Racines/My Roots is an electrifying, seductive record. It carries a diabolical charge of rock energy which suffuses the ancestral miarred, malouf, hadra or mezoued rhythms. Oud and saturated six-string guitars speak a common language, supported by an efficient collaboration between drums and bendirs. The compositions are varied, well-judged, and sensitive. Finally, and above all, Sabry Mosbah’s voice, by turns biting and soothing, incarnates the hope of a modernity which respects its past, its country and the world which surrounds it.
