Indie rock singer/songwriter Mondo Cozmo presents his debut album, Plastic Soul. The album was recorded over a two-week period in Joshua Tree, with only his dog Cozmo for company. Plastic Soul was released by Republic Records and contains the songs “Shine,” “Hold on to Me,” and “Higher.” ~ Liam MartinHe sings with Bob Dylan’s slur but unites it with the stylings of some notable Britrock bands. You could file him beside Kasabian after hearing the over-egged dance-rock of Automatic, or Spiritualized due to the gospel uplift of Shine. Perhaps unwisely he resurrects the forgotten dance sub-genre big beat on 11 Acre, which lifts its style and melody from a 1995 Chemical Brothers remix of The Charlatans. These are hardly fashionable influences, but when he turns his sampling ear to Erma Franklin’s Piece of My Heart on the title track, he lands on a subtle soulfulness that deserves to be much more widely heard.
