Granger Smith made the film They Were There, a Hero’s Documentary to salute the soldiers and veterans who often do not make the headlines, even during a time of prolonged war. Not every song on the soundtrack is explicitly about soldiers the way the title track is, which is partially due to how it relies heavily on material Smith had previously released, especially his 2017 album When the Good Guys Win. Nevertheless, in this context, songs like the exuberant “You’re In It” and the ballad “Home Cooked Meal” play like paeans to the simple pleasures soldiers and vets yearn for, which makes They Were There a cohesive album in a way few other Smith albums are. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
