This title opens a surprising window of views onto fantastic sound landscapes, leading us, above all, into the depths of my memories of Anton Heiller and his Tanz-Toccata. It is this piece that occupies the place of honour at the centre of this programme, surrounded by toccatas of all kinds, its dancing movement calling for agile fingers, skilful feet, and a cheerful spirit. My choice of pieces required an organ capable of perfectly translating both a German and a French repertoire, and these qualities are to be found in the work of the Goll organ-building firm (Lucerne), which, in 1991, installed a new organ in the historic, 163-year-old case by the Swiss builder Franz Josef Remigius Bossart (1777-1853).
The Goll in the French Church of Bern speaks a harmonious German whilst elegantly fulfilling its role as ambassador of France. Even after 30 years of existence, this organ manages to convince with its creative beauty and richness of sound: truly, a work that honours its creator! I am grateful for the hospitality and generosity with which this instrument was lent to me. Sheltered from street noise, in a welcome silence provided by the virus, I was able to work undisturbed in this venerable edifice. The organ was my inspired partner, my graceful dancer and my knowledgeable guide in this lovely musical garden.
