Actually, she had ended her career in 1941 after her marriage, but in 1951, at the express request of Francesco Cilea, she took on the title role in his opera Adriana Lecouvreur. What was initially intended only as a posthumous fulfillment of a wish of the composer turned out to be a restart of her career, which was to last until the 1990s. About her leading role, she told Olivero as follows: Sometimes it seems to me that I have only sung Adriana at all, in my so infinitely long career. Everyone says, ah Adriana, then I say: but after all, I have sung 84 other operas, except Adriana. But that’s right, Adriana was a love at first sight. The live recording of her prime role of Adriana Lecouvreur was made in 1963 as a BBC recording during a guest performance of the famous Neapolitan Teatro San Carlo at the Edinburgh Festival and shows the singer at the peak of her skills. It is actually needless to mention that this outstanding radio recording is also being released on sound carriers for the first time.
