The Coasters are an outstanding vocal group from Los Angeles, whose peak of popularity came in the second half of the 1950s; doo-wop performers. From competitors like The Platters and The Drifters, this group was distinguished by a humorous approach to performances and lyrics. In 1987, The Coasters became the first vocal group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The name of the band hints at their origin from the west coast of the USA. The Coasters were formed in 1955 from members of The Robins band, which traces its history back to 1949. The first single released was a humorous “song with a plot” Down in Mexico — the prototype of a number of hits in a similar optimistic tone, foreshadowing the sound of the Beach Boys and other surf rockers of the 1960s (the song was included in the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino’s film “Proof of Death”).

The Coasters achieved the highest success after updating the line-up and moving to New York in 1957: the single “Yakety Yak” written by Leiber and Stoller reached the first line in the Billboard Hot 100, and the risky hit “Poison Ivy” gave rise to many cover versions (this song was one of the first recorded by The Rolling Stones). With the beginning of the British invasion, the popularity of The Coasters came to naught.

The songs “Yakety Yak” and “Young Blood” performed by The Coasters are included in the list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll compiled by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
