Dinah Shore, born Frances Rose Shore (Winchester, Tennessee), February 29, 1916-Beverly Hills, February 24 1994), was an American singer, actress and television personality and the best female singer of the 1940s. She became known as a performer during the Big Band era. Ten years later, she achieved even greater success, appearing on television, mainly as the host of a series of varied programs for the Chevrolet car company. After failing vocal auditions for the bands of Benny Goodman and both Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Shore did it on her own. She became the first singer of her time to achieve tremendous solo success. She had a string of 80 popular hits, spanning 1940-1957, and after appearing in a handful of feature films, she went on to have a four-decade career on American television. She starred in her own music and variety shows from 1951 to 1963 and presented two talk shows in the 1970s. TV Guide placed her at number 16 on their list of the 50 Best Television stars of all time. Stylistically, Shore was compared to the two singers Jo Stafford and Patti Page, who followed her in the mid-late 1940s and early 1950s.
